De wijngaard van Château l’Evangile beslaat 22 hectare en is grofweg aangeplant met 80% Merlot en 20% Cabernet Franc. Merlot draagt bij aan de fruitige smaak en body, terwijl Cabernet Franc de finesse en structuur in de wijn brengt. De bodem is zeldzaam aan deze kant van Pomerol, met kiezels aan het oppervlakte. Château l’Evangile deelt deze bodem met Château Petrus en Château Cheval Blanc (Saint-Émilion). Sinds 2001 wordt er geen gebruik meer gemaakt van chemische bestrijdingsmiddelen en sinds 2007 werken ze biologisch.
Château l’Evangile is één van de oudste landgoederen van Pomerol met een geschiedenis die teruggaat naar het jaar 1741. Lange tijd was het in handen van de familie Chaperon totdat Baron Eric de Rothschild, van Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) het in 1990 overnam.
Pomerol is een kleine, maar wereldberoemde appellatie van 800 hectare in totaal. In tegenstelling tot de rest van Bordeaux heeft Pomerol geen classificatie. “Pomerol is also a place that takes the Merlot grape, dismissed for being fruity, easy-drinking and not quite serious, and turns it into stubbornly long-lasting liquid poetry”, aldus Jane Anson, Bordeaux-expert van Decanter.
James Suckling (100/100): "Stunning aromas of blackberries, black olives, brown sugar and dried flowers. Tar. Full-bodied, dense and layered. Superfine tannins, yet this is muscular and long. An amazing wine reminiscent of the great L’Evangiles of the 1950s. Straight track. Goes on and on. Truly great wine. Try in 2024. Just a baby."
Robert Parker (97+/100): "The 2015 L'Evangile is composed of 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc and was matured for 18 months in new oak barrels from Tonnellerie des Domaines (their own cooperage). Deep garnet-purple in color, it absolutely leaps from the glass with complex, gregarious notes of blackberry pie, plum preserves, smoked meats/charcuterie, mocha and licorice plus suggestions of cloves, black soil and unsmoked cigars. Full-bodied, rich, opulent and jaw-droppingly sexy, it has beautifully plush yet firm tannins with a lively backbone and a very long, spicy finish.'
