Robert Parker (90/100): "The 2009 Winemaker's Selection is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from a high-altitude vineyard in San Fernando, a Cabernet Franc from the Maquis vineyard and Carmenere from Marchigue, closer to the ocean. It has notes of smoke, chocolate and espresso coffee with dusty, chunky tannins which feel a little drying toward the finish. A very good, powerful, commercial blend that needs to find its balance.
Calcu shares ownership with Maquis, also in Colchagua, a younger operation producing wines from grapes sourced in different parts of the valley with focus on Cabernet Sauvignon. They own around 200 hectares of vineyards. They are advised by Jacques Boissenot, a well-known consultant for top Chateaux in Bordeaux. They try to use a majority of grapes from Marchigue, in the coastal part of Colchagua, where the soils are mostly granite-based mixed with others from higher altitudes in the mountain zone."
Complexity and elegant tannic structure Calcu Winemaker’s Selection is a blend expressing the power and clean fruit character of its terroir in Marchigüe. It has tannins that fill the mouth, a fresh palate and a long, persistent finish. Calcu Winemaker’s Selection seeks to express the strength and character of the terroir. It is impregnated with a unique hallmark, characterized by intense fresh fruit – generally dark, mineral notes, and tannins that fill with mouth with tremendous body. Tasting notes Deep and bright red-purple color. The nose reveals notes of black cherry, fresh plum and a clear presence of different types of black fruits. The palate shows a great body with an elegant tannic structure, and a fresh and fruity finish.
